Nature reserve

The nature reserve "Hohes Wäldchen auf dem Nutscheid" is five hectares and was formerly used by the military. That is why the small area on the forest ridge was kept open, allowing dwarf shrub heather and lean grassland to develop. Dwarf shrub heaths are the first form of vegetation to spread on nutrient-poor sandy soils, but like lean grassland are often displaced by intensive cultivation. These areas are particularly threatened here by scrub with gorse and must therefore be kept open at all times. In 1999 the area became a nature reserve and since then it has been grazed regularly by sheep , whose browsing causes an expansion of the landscape, which has become rare.
