Weilerhofer See

The Weilerhofer See is located in the Niederkassel urban area near the Weilerhof . It has a surface of 10.9 hectares, is up to 25 meters deep and is designated as a nature reserve SU-022. The water is one of the ten most important biotope lakes in Germany. There is therefore a general ban on entering the bank area of ​​the fenced-in lake. The 28 hectare site is looked after by the Naturschutzbund Deutschland .

Until 1997 the Weilerhofer See was a gravel area and was later used as a bathing lake. In today's biotope, 77 different bird species have been observed so far, 15 of them from the Red List , such as the great crested grebe . Of the bird species that occur, 34 breed at the lake, including the sparrowhawk , lapwing , turtledove , reed warbler , green winged bunting , reed hammer and goldhammer .

In Weilerhofer See the tree candelabras ( Tolypella sp. , See also: candelabrum algae ) and the ball candelabra algae ( Tolypella glomerata ) grow . Fish species include bitterling , gudgeon , pikeperch , perch , roach and pike . In 2000, the State Institute for Ecology used crayfish whose population has stabilized. There is also a population of large mussels in the lake .

The adjacent rough meadows are protected from competing plants with the help of goats .
