The nature reserve (NSG) Siegaue is located in the city of Niederkassel between the cities of Bonn , Sankt Augustin and Troisdorf and was designated in 1985. The 535 hectare area is a structured floodplain landscape. In the city of Bonn adjoins the 1,983 designated nature reserve victory mouth with 150.87 ha of. In the section southwest of Meindorf to the mouth, the border between the city of Bonn and the Rhein-Sieg district or the border between the two nature reserves runs in the Sieg.

The river floodplain of the Sieg is mainly used as grassland. Is the area structured by small trees, poplar forests and lowland forest residues , as well as embedded backwaters . Broad gravel banks with white willow and osier bushes as well as varied reed cane grow in the mouth area on the banks of the Rhine. The Siegaue is bounded by a flood dam, on which species-rich grasslands thrive, which is an ideal biotope for some locusts and butterflies. The area is further enriched for waders and water birds by the nearby Sieglarer See . The Siegaue as a varied floodplain landscape with oxbow lakes and alluvial forest is of national importance, especially for water birds and waders. In addition, there are significant stocks of fish species from the Fauna-Flora-Habitat Directive . The backwaters and the remnants of the softwood alluvial forests are typical but now rare FFH habitats for the Cologne-Bonn Rhine Plain natural area. Geomorphologically, the mouth of the Sieg is considered to be the best-developed estuary in the central Rhine Valley with near-natural flooding dynamics. The Siegaue is particularly valuable as a resting and wintering area for very endangered bird species.

Situation in the NSG

There are massive problems in the NSG with visitors who disregard the regulations in the NSG. Walkers and riders disregard the marked trails , dog handlers and the way Anleingebot and anglers fishing bans. In the summer there is illegal bathing and storage, with crickets and tents. Driving bans for boats are ignored. The illegal leisure activities are held responsible for the decline or extinction of bird species such as the little owl , nightingale and yellow mockers .

Animal species in the NSG

Large parts of the NSG have been registered under the number DE-5208-301 since 2004 as Natura2000 area with an area of 564 ha. While some parts of the NSG Siegaue and victory mouth not part of the FFH area, but include items from the NSG victory mouth to FFH area.

In 2017, the Siegauen rape took place in the Sieg Mouth nature reserve in Bonn's urban area .
