Dachelsberg

Geology and quarry

The Dächelsberg is a disused basalt - quarry between Lower and Upper Bachem. The mountain is of volcanic origin. It was active in the tertiary around 25 million years ago. The structure of the volcano is visible:

“The chimney in the center of the volcano consists of vertically standing basalt columns ... The chimney is laterally surrounded by softer basalt and basalt tuff (note: trachyte - tuff ), which are more weathered. Calcareous loess has been blown on the flanks of the volcano . "

- North Rhine-Westphalia geological service

The quarry was in operation with interruptions from 1857 until the 1960s. Inmates of the Rheinbach prison worked there most recently . The operator was the company Horst & Jüssen . The basalt was mined for road construction.

natural reserve

When the quarry was finished, the quarry was full of water. In 1981 the municipality of Wachtberg acquired the site for conservation as a natural monument. The dilapidated crusher was blown up in 1982. The Dächelsberg has been under nature protection since 1984 and is looked after by NABU , district group Bonn, on behalf of the Rhein-Sieg district . The Dächelsberg has the biotope identifier 5308-902.

tourism

The Dächelsberg is located on the Fire Route themed hiking trail managed by the Rhineland Nature Park and on the Wasserburgen-Route bike trail . An observation tower was built in 2015 to provide a view of the ecologically valuable, former quarry. Access to the site is not possible for environmental and safety reasons.
