Basalt quarries Hühnerberg and Eudenberg / Eudenbach clay pit
The nature reserve basalt quarries Hühnerberg and Eudenberg / Tongrube Eudenbach is located in the towns of Königswinter and Hennef (Sieg) in the Rhein-Sieg district (North Rhine-Westphalia). It is registered with the European Union in accordance with Directive 92/43 / EEC ( Fauna-Flora-Habitat Directive ) with the identification number DE-5309-304 and is part of the European Natura 2000 network of protected areas.
location
The area consists of two separate areas. The Hühnerberg basalt quarry and the former Eudenbach clay pit in Königswinter, west of Eudenbach, are directly connected via a block rubble dump. The former basalt quarry Eudenberg is located 1.5 kilometers northeast on the border with the city of Hennef, but is hardly structurally separated.

The reserve has an area of 144 hectares . While there are only tiny bodies of water in the Hühnerberg basalt quarry and the Eudenbach clay pit, a pond has formed in the Eudenberg basalt quarry .
Animal welfare
The protection position mainly serves to protect the yellow-bellied toad and the crested newt . In the Hühnerberg quarry, which was still used by Rheinische Basalt- und Lavawerke GmbH, larvae of yellow-bellied toads and midwife toads were found. A small population of yellow-bellied toads and a larger population of crested newts were sighted in the former clay pit. The micro waters also act mountain newts , pond newts , toads , grass frogs , water frogs and toads obstetrician as spawning grounds. In addition, the three reptile species sand lizard , slow worm and grass snake have been identified. In the pond of the Eudenberg quarry there is a yellow-bellied toad population of over 50 animals.
Other protected areas
The two nature reserves Basalt Quarry Hühnerberg (NSG SU-083) and Basalt Quarry Eudenberg (NSG SU-087) cover similar areas as the FFH area, but extend over 50 hectares in total.
