The Imhausen quarry is a nature reserve of around 18 hectares in the municipality of Windeck south of the village of Imhausen , which is still operated as an active quarry .

Grauwacke has been mined in the Imhausen quarry since 1932 . Since 1992 it has been run by Basalt-Actien-Gesellschaft . In 2005 the annual mining rate was 350,000 t .

In 2000, twenty adult yellow-bellied toads and eight adult midwife toads were found in the quarry . Due to the occurrence of amphibians , the quarry was registered as an FFH area under the ID DE-5211-304 .

Since the nature reserve ordinance issued later by the Cologne district government would have made it difficult to continue operating the quarry, a special contract was signed on April 12, 2005 between the responsible ministry and the quarry company. In it a further operation of the quarry was fixed for twenty years. This is the most favorable solution for maintaining the landscape, as the deepening of the lanes is important spawning waters and the threat of bush encroachment on the rocky slopes when it is closed would have reduced the necessary solar radiation.
