The quartz sand pit is a nature reserve in the city of Bornheim in the North Rhine-Westphalian Rhein-Sieg district . In this area, quartz sand excavation areas with small bodies of water, tall forebears and bushes and surrounding woody stands are to be preserved and optimized.

location

Most of the nature reserve is located in the Bornheim district of Brenig . It is located on a knoll east of the district on the border with Roisdorf . The steep slope area of the old terrace edge forms the north and west edges of the area. To the southeast is the An der Roisdorf Hufebahn nature reserve, and to the southwest is the Mühlbachtal nature reserve .

description

Quartz sand was mined in the area until 1987. The former excavation is an important retreat for rare animals and plants. The close juxtaposition of sand, lignite, gravel and clay results in a dense mosaic of different biotopes. Here there are pine trees - oaks - low - and middle forest , completely verbuschte fruit wasteland , broom bushes , locust trees , a small stream Eschwald rest and partially wooded with deciduous trees brownfields. Rare hymenoptera and ground beetles need open areas, amphibians need flat, unshaded ponds. One protection goal is to preserve the open soils and the early stages of vegetation development.

The area is fenced, so there is a viewing platform (“Fietzeks Weitsicht” ) and regular guided tours .
