Life

Albert Klomp was a son of the Amsterdam shoemaker Jan Alberts (* 1593) and his wife Trijnte born from Harlingen . Intjes (alias Ydes; * 1597). His parents married on July 17, 1621 in Amsterdam. Little is known about the life of Albert Klomp. He allegedly began painting in 1633 and was believed to have been a student of Pieter Codde . On April 19, 1657 he married the eldest daughter of the Amsterdam painter Guilliam du Gardijn (1596–1647) and his first wife, Jannetgen geb. IJsbrands (1597–1632), Maria du Gardijn (baptized August 11, 1620; buried January 2, 1688). The bride and groom were quite old for their time and remained childless. On June 16, 1663, the wife, who was five years older than him, appointed him as her heir. Klomp painted until his death.

Towards the evening of December 20, 1688, the widower "around 70 years old" left his house in Amsterdam and never came back. Despite an advertisement that was published on February 12, 1689 in the “Amsterdamsche Saturdagsche Courant” and which, by the way, was almost the only source of information about his life for a long time, it was not possible to clear up his fate. It was later suspected that he had a fatal accident on the day of his disappearance.

Klomp's paintings continued the tradition of Paulus Potter and Adriaen van de Velde as well as Karel Dujardin , but they always remained below the level of these models. Klomp usually painted small-format, sunny landscapes that were animated with animals. The landscapes are clearly recognizable as Dutch. Among the animals that can be seen as accessories, cows are the most common, Klomp also painted sheep and goats, and sometimes a shepherd can also be seen. Klomp's signed pictures only existed from 1657, which suggests that he developed his own distinct style late, which he was well aware of. This is probably why he did not sign the earlier works. This could be used by business-minded dealers by often providing such pictures with false signatures by Potter and spending them for his works. Klomp only rarely dated the signed paintings, so that it is impossible to reconstruct their chronological order.

All of Klomp's pictures are structured in a similar way. The high sky hangs over the flat landscape, which extends to the low horizon. The animals lie or stand in the foreground. A homestead can often be seen behind it between trees. Klomp used warm, pleasant colors. For his landscapes he always chose a time of day that enabled him to show his skills in dealing with light and shadow. His pictures are technically at a high level, but thematically they are monotonous and a bit bland in expression. That is why Klomp is counted among the small masters today.

In the 18th century, Louis Garreau and Jean Baptiste Lebrun made copperplate engravings based on his paintings. A number of his paintings are now scattered in many museums, some are also in private hands.
