Hans Schneider (art historian)
Hans Schneider (born August 4, 1888 in Basel ; † November 7, 1953 ibid) was a Swiss art historian and director of the Netherlands Institute for Art History (RKD). His art historical interest was in Dutch painting of the 17th century.
Life
Hans Schneider studied art history , archeology and history in Basel, Munich, Rome and Berlin. In 1914 he received his doctorate from Basel University . His dissertation was entitled Contributions to the history of the Dutch influence on Upper German painting and graphics around 1460-1480 . After completing his studies, he moved to the Netherlands and was director of the Mauritshuis in The Hague from 1915 to 1930 . In 1923 he gave a lecture on the method of art history at the University of Leiden and was one of the editors of the art history periodical Oud Holland from 1937 to 1940 . From 1930 to 1940 he was director of the Netherlands Institute for Art History . After the occupation of the Netherlands by the Wehrmacht, Schneider left his adopted home in 1941 and returned to Switzerland, where he became head of the project “ Die Kunstdenkmäler der Schweiz ” and was in charge of the publication of the same name.
Hans Schneider was friends with the German art historian and director of the Berlin Gemäldegalerie Max J. Friedländer and helped him emigrate to the Netherlands.
Hans Schneider served as a middleman between Nathan Katz and Walter Andreas Hofer .
Schneider also played a role in the removal of the auction catalogs for the Mainz antiques and art dealer David Reiling .
