The Niederpleis clay pit is a nature reserve in the town of Sankt Augustin in the Rhein-Sieg district of North Rhine-Westphalia .

location

The nature reserve is located in the Sankt Augustiner districts of Buisdorf and Niederpleis . It is located south of the former landfill and the A 560 , west of the A 3 and northeast of the ICE route. Ecologically, its location can be described as largely isolated due to the neighboring settlement areas and transport infrastructure.

description

The terraced former clay pit was placed under nature protection as early as the 1970s. The nature reserve has a size of around 24.5 hectares . It also includes forest and grassland areas that border the pit.

The waters in the NSG are home to the largest yellow-bellied toad population in the Rhineland . In 1998 the population numbered over 200 animals. In Tongrubenweiher also has crested newt can form a very large population. Another five amphibian species live here : pond newt , mountain newt , common frog , pond frog and common toad . Occurrences of the natterjack toad were documented here until 1985. The reptiles grass snake and sand lizard also occur in larger populations .

FFH area

Part of the nature reserve, the actual mine area, is registered as a FFH area Tongrube Niederpleis with the European Union in accordance with the provisions of Directive 92/43 / EEC ( Fauna-Flora-Habitat Directive ) with the number DE-5209-302.
