The basalt Actien Society is a German building materials company. It is also called Basalt AG for short. Their main business areas are the quarrying of natural stone and the production of asphalt as well as their sale.

history

On June 2, 1888, three German quarry owners and eight Dutch merchants founded the Basalt-Actien-Gesellschaft in Cologne under the leadership of the Cologne quarry owner Wilhelm Zervas . The company had a branch in Rotterdam , the "Basalt-Maatschappij", and owned the majority of shares in the Bröltalbahn in Beuel . The Werhahn family was involved in Basalt AG from the start and has been on its supervisory board since March 1896 . In 1892 the headquarters of Basalt AG were relocated to Linz am Rhein . 1920–1921 the company had a representative administration building built on Linzhausenstrasse ( Bundesstrasse 42 ) by the architects Mattar & Scheler .

The period up to 1930 was marked by numerous acquisitions and holdings. Among other things, Basalt AG merged with Bergisch-Märkische Stein-Industrie AG in Cologne and took a stake in AG Eisenfelder Steinwerke , in Pfalz-Saarbrücker Hartstein-Industrie AG , and in H. Reinarz Zementwarenfabrik GmbH in Düsseldorf . In addition, Basalt AG was one of the co-founders of the Basalt Union (1927), the Société des Basaltes Français based in Paris (1928) and Strabag (1923).

The Second World War marked a deep turning point for Basalt AG. Not only were most of the production facilities destroyed, but Sächsische Granit AG and the Vacha plant were also expropriated. Furthermore, several investments in Dutch companies and the Société des Basaltes Français had to be given up. In the 1950s, the company was able to use the general economic upswing to reposition itself . In 1967 a profit-sharing agreement was concluded with Strabag and the majority of shares in Dolorit-Basalt AG in Cologne were acquired.

In April 1978 the Sal. Oppenheim bank , one of the most important shareholders in Basalt AG , parted with its shares. Via the subsidiary Werhahn & Nauen , which had previously acted as asset management company , Wilh. Werhahn KG increased its ownership share to 100 percent and thus became the sole owner of Basalt AG .

After the turning point in 1990 , subsidiaries were founded, e. B. the Lausitz natural stone and building material works (LNB) . In 1996, the majority takeover of Deutag GmbH & Co. KG, including Erste Bayerische Basaltstein-AG , followed in 2003 the takeover of the quarries of the insolvent Philipp Holzmann AG.

Today, Basalt AG, with around 150 affiliated companies in the fields of natural stone products and asphalt mixes, is one of the leading manufacturers of building materials in Germany.
