geography

location

Rentzschmühle

Rentzschmühle is located on a former ford over the White Elster at the exit of the Steinicht nature reserve , where the paths from Cossengrün and Ruppertsgrün lead down into the valley. The settlement is located in the northwest of the municipality of Pöhl in the center of the natural area Vogtland ( Vogtland Switzerland ) in the Saxon part of the historical Vogtland . The settlement lies in the corridor of four different locations. The main part with most of the houses east of the White Elster is in the Ruppertsgrüner Flur. Only a few houses on Rentzschmühlenbächel are in the Liebauer Flur. The houses west of the White Elster with the Rentzschmühle train station, however, are in the hallway of Trieb. Opposite Rentzschmühle, on the western bank of the White Elster, the "Lochhaus" is Thuringian and the second oldest settlement in this corner. It gets its name from the " Lohe " overgrown ground. This belongs to the Greiz district of Cossengrün.

history

Rentzschmühle is not a uniform municipality, but a settlement that belonged to two states (Saxony and Thuringia), three parishes Ruppertsgrün , Steinsdorf , Schönbach and four municipalities (Ruppertsgrün, Cossengrün, Trieb and Liebau). Due to these conditions, the residents of Rentzschmühle were able to celebrate a fair three times a year, especially since the necessary refreshment stops were not missing in every district.

History of the mill until the 16th century

The Rentzschmühle can undoubtedly be considered the oldest building on this valley floor. In 1441 it appears in a document as a mill on the White Elster under Liebau. In 1464 the name Rentzschmühle first appeared in connection with Ruppertsgrün. From the Turkish tax register (Reichstürkenhilfe) from 1521 (Reichstag zu Worms) we learn a lot about their value, because there it says: "Erhart Rentzschmüller, has estimated his mul around seven hundred guilders, al his vh - namely 9 cows for 29 guilders." Information indicates a relatively large operation, especially since three servants and three maids were employed in it.

In 1562 the Rentzschmühle became the personal property of Mr. Georg von Dölau from Ruppertsgrün ( Reußen von Plauen zu Greiz ), who tried to make it more efficient. After all, it had seven courses and was considered one of the most artful mills in the Vogtland . Next to the mill, the von Dölau built a kind of mansion around 1620, which is said to have been “precious” inside, and the so-called “wash house in front of the upper gate”, where the servants of the manor family probably lived. The manorial rule over Rentzschmühle was around 1583 at the Liebau manor .

17th and 18th centuries

The brisk mill operation made a bridge necessary shortly after 1600, the builder of which Joachim von Dölau must be regarded as. In 1632 there was a setback in the Thirty Years War . The "Holkschen Scharen" ( Heinrich von Holk 1599–1633), who invaded at Wallenstein's behest , found access to this quiet valley floor, plundered the manor house and mill and destroyed the bridge. In accordance with the needs of the time, the mansion was not rebuilt at all, but everything else was rebuilt in a simple manner. The bridge was replaced by a footbridge that rested on a stone pillar and was supported at its ends by wooden struts.

In 1796 the manor owners von Ruppertsgrün and Liebau planned to build a closed bridge instead of the previous one, and sought permission from the elector to levy a bridge tariff that would allow interest and repayment of the capital invested. However, since difficulties arose because of the slip point in Steinsdorf, this planning was apparently not pursued any further. The current bridge dates from the time of the railway line construction (1870), but it was rebuilt in 1999 at river kilometer 176.7 for 1.2 million DM.

19th century

For a while, the Rentzschmühle was also of mining importance. In 1856 the miner Hartmann from Pöhl acquired the right to mine for iron on the “Mühlleiten”. With the help of the financially strong Königin-Marien-Hütte in Cainsdorf near Zwickau , the Hartmanns treasure trove was launched two years later and a tunnel was driven 60 meters deep into the rock. In 1861 and 1870 further tunnels were built. In its prime, 26 workers were employed in the Hartmann treasure trove; the annual iron ore yield fluctuated between 512 quintals in 1858 and 29,000 quintals in 1872. In 1879 the mine was closed.

The Rentzschmühle settlement in the corridor of Ruppertsgrün was in the Electoral Saxon or Royal Saxon Office of Plauen until 1856 . In 1856 the settlement was affiliated to the Elsterberg court office and in 1875 to the Plauen administration . The Rentzschmühle was originally a grinding, cutting, fulling and oil mill. After 1870 the oil mill was closed and a cardboard factory was built in its place. A fire in 1882 only temporarily disrupted this operation. A flood in November 1898 flooded the valley floor. However, production did not stop.

With the opening of the Gera Süd – Weischlitz (Elstertalbahn) line on September 8, 1875, Rentzschmühle received a station for passenger and freight traffic. The station building on the west bank of the White Elster in Trieb's corridor was put into operation on May 1, 1905.

20th century to the present

In Rentzschmühle there were four inns until about 1953, namely the Hotel Steinicht, built by the May family in 1876/77 (1963 to 1993 holiday home and children's camp of the Leipzig transport company "LVB", also referred to on postcards as " VEB Kombinat Verkehrsbetriebe der Stadt Leipzig") ), the Lochhaus, located in front of the quarry entrance to the Grünsteinwerke and demolished in 1973, Bauer's restaurant opposite the Rentzschmühle and the former gondola station, which later became a post office and is now used as a residential building.

As a result of the second district reform in the GDR , the municipality of Ruppertsgrün, to which Rentzschmühle belonged, became part of Plauen-Land in the Chemnitz district in 1952 (renamed Karl-Marx-Stadt district in 1953 ), which from 1990 continued as the Saxon "Plauen district" and became part of the Vogtlandkreis in 1996.

In June 1954 the Rentzschmühle was hit a second time by a flood, from which the company hardly recovered. In 1960 the production of cardboard was stopped. Mr. Hans Wegel from Plauen, produced filters, shoe soles and loose-leaf binders from 1961. The VEB Zwönitz was taken over until 1987. A year later, the production facility was transferred to the VEB heating device under the management of Dieter Ehrler from Rentzschmühle. Until 1990 parts for electric stoves were produced. In 1991 the company was shut down. 1992 change of ownership. Mr. Frank Finger from Werdau (Saxony) opened an inn with a holiday home. Until 2004 the restaurant business with room rental was maintained. In spring 2008 there was a change of ownership, as a residential building for this property.

The municipality of Ruppertsgrün with its districts Rentzschmühle, Liebau and Christgrün merged with the municipalities of Helmsgrün, Herlasgrün, Jocketa and Möschwitz to form the new municipality of Pöhl as part of the municipal reform in the Free State of Saxony on January 1, 1994.

The Gera Süd – Weischlitz (Elstertalbahn) (KBS 541) from Gera Süd via Weischlitz in the direction of Cheb , which runs through Rentzschmühle, was opened for passenger and freight traffic on September 8, 1875, and the station building at kilometer 40.711 was opened on May 1, 1905 to hand over. The short Steinichttunnel, also called Rentzschmühler Tunnel, is located in the local area at km 39.7, the route is served by the Vogtlandbahn as RB4.

On June 27, 1960, a class VT 18.16 or BR 175 express railcar as a Karlex train crashed near the broken diabase on the railway bridge on its way between Czechoslovakia and the GDR .

The historic wooden waiting hall at Rentzschmühle train station was demolished in May 2018 and replaced by a much smaller, modern waiting hall.
