Barthmühle was originally the name of a single mill in the valley of the White Elster, with whose water it was operated. She was mentioned in 1533 as "the Bearded Mole". In 1764 the Barthmühle belonged to the manor of the Röttis manor .

The original settlement developed around the mill of the same name. With regard to the administration, Barthmühle belonged to the Electoral Saxon or Royal Saxon Office of Plauen until 1856 . The shares of Barthmühle, which were in the corridors of Jocketa, Liebau and Trieb, belonged to the Elsterberg court office from 1856 , while the part under Röttis belonged to the Plauen court office . In 1875 Barthmühle became part of the Plauen administration . At that time, Barthmühle's affiliation had already passed from Röttis to Liebau.

The Barthmühle station on the Gera Süd – Weischlitz (Elstertalbahn) line, whose half-timbered reception building is a listed building, was opened on July 15, 1879. It is located in the corridor of the village of Liebau, which was incorporated into Ruppertsgrün on July 1, 1950 . With the incorporation of Trieb to Jocketa, the shares of Barthmühle in the Jocketa corridor and in the Trieb corridor were combined in one municipality on January 1, 1974. Through the second district reform in the GDR , Barthmühle as a whole came to the Plauen-Land district in the Chemnitz district (renamed the Karl-Marx-Stadt district in 1953 ), which was continued as the Saxon "Plauen district" from 1990 and in 1996 in the Vogtland district rose. Barthmühle was next to Trieb and Neudörfel the third district of the municipality Jocketa, which on January 1, 1994 with other places, u. a. the municipality of Ruppertsgrün with Liebau was merged to form the municipality of Pöhl.
