history

There is evidence that the Lords of Berge existed as early as the 13th century. At the beginning of the 14th century they were feudal men of the Count of Arnsberg . In the fiefdom of Arnsberg Count Wilhelm from 1313 it says that the brothers Heinrich and Bolemann de Berge were entrusted with three farms in the valley of the Wennefluß, two of them in Oberberge and one in Berge. The ownership in Berge then changed hands several times. In 1661, Jobst Edmund von Brabeck bought the indebted property for 20,330 thalers. Three years later he built today's Niederberge manor house . The places Niederberge, Mittelberge and Oberberge existed for a long time as independent places. Around 1800 an ironworks was put into operation on the Wenne of the Berger Eisenhammer and in Mittelberge. The place Bergerhütte was created in the area of this ironworks. The iron hammer remained in operation until 1862. In 1913 it was converted into a wire drawing shop after several changes of ownership. In 2013, the 700th anniversary was celebrated with a ceremony.

As of December 31, 2017, Berge had 1,139 inhabitants.
