nature and environment

Wennemäander with bank break and gravel bank at Schmallenberg-Menkhausen

Except for local locations, the river runs within protected areas for nature. The upper reaches are mostly in the nature reserve Vossmecke and Wennetal between Obringhausen and Niederberndorf . In the middle reaches large areas in the Wenneaue landscape protection area from Niederberndorf to north of Grimminghausen , in the Wenne landscape protection area and tributary near Lochtrop and in the Wenne landscape protection area between Frielinghausen and the Bremke sewage treatment plant . Large parts of the lower reaches of the Wenne have been designated as the Wennetal nature reserve and as the Ruhrtal and Wennetal landscape conservation area near Wennemen , and at the same time as the Wenne FFH area . The Wennetal nature reserve from south Wenholthausen to south Gut Blessenohl and the Wenne nature reserve with its inflow at Haus Wenne serve as a buffer zone for the Wennetal nature reserve and do not include any areas of the Wenne itself.

The water quality of the Wenne has improved in recent years. It is considered a good fishing area for trout and grayling .

Breeding birds

So far, kingfisher , dipper , gray wagtail and mallard have been identified as breeding birds on the Wenne . Herons and black storks appear as food guests .
