history

Wenholthausen, then Wineholthusen, was built around the year 800. In the 14th century, a hoof in Wenholthausen, at that time "Wenholthusen", belonged to the inventory of the Meschede Monastery . Early clues about the size of the place emerge from an appraisal register (this was used to collect taxes) for the year 1543. According to this, there were 27 appraisers in “Wenholthaußen”; the number should have agreed with the farms or houses that existed at the time.

The Free County of Wenholthausen used to belong to the Fredeburg office . Later the place or the community belonged to the Eslohe office . The community of Wenholthausen includes the “suburbs” Blessenohl , Oesterberge , Friedrichstal and Einberg. In 1911 the Altenhundem – Wenholthausen and Finnentrop – Wennemen railway lines were opened.

In the course of the local reorganization of North Rhine-Westphalia, the community Wenholthausen was dissolved on January 1, 1975 and incorporated into the community Eslohe. The dismantling of the railway line began in Schmallenberg in 2004.

Religions

Around 80% of the population are Catholic. The Romanesque parish church of St. Cäcilia was built in the 13th century. The time when the Wenholthausen parish was founded is unknown. In 1364 Grevenstein was separated from the Wenholthausen parish.
