Niedersalwey is a district of the community Eslohe (Sauerland) in the North Rhine-Westphalian Hochsauerlandkreis .

geography

The village is located about 5 km west of Eslohe in the Sauerland-Rothaargebirge nature park . Neighborhoods are Sieperting , Obersalwey and In der Marpe . The 519 road runs through Niedersalwey and the Salwey flows . At the end of 2019, the place had 519 inhabitants.

history

The place Salwey was first mentioned on February 14, 1354.

Early clues about the size of the place can be found in an appraisal register (used to collect taxes) for the year 1543. According to this, there were 12 taxpayers in “NiddernSalwege” (the three largest taxes were due to Peter Fomme, Dietherich Glorich and Euerdt Wortman); this number should have agreed with the courtyards or houses existing at that time.

In 1801 there was a Jewish family in Niedersalwey. In 1902 the community built a representative house for the first clergyman in the village. The village has been part of the new Eslohe community since January 1, 1975.

religion

St. Sebastian Church

The listed Quirinus Chapel dates from the second half of the 13th century. The St. Sebastian Church was built in 1956/57.

In 1941, the then vicar got into conflict with the Nazi authorities because of a trifle regarding a processional parade . Because on July 11, 1941 a vehicle with party officials had to wait some time because of a procession , the responsible parish vicar Otto Günnewich was arrested and taken to the police prison in Dortmund . He was then taken to the prison in Bochum and on November 21, 1941 to the Dachau concentration camp . Otto Günnewich was transferred to the Hartheim Castle extermination camp near Linz on August 10, 1942 on an invalid transport . According to the inmate numbers from Dachau, he died on September 23, 1942. In 1967 a memorial was erected for him on the church square.
