Reiste is a district of the municipality Eslohe (Sauerland) in the North Rhine-Westphalian Hochsauerlandkreis , Germany . Until the end of 1974, Reiste and the surrounding towns formed an independent municipality in the Eslohe district . At the end of 2016, the district had 749 inhabitants.

Reiste is located in the east of the Eslohe community, around 4.5 km east of Eslohe. The Reismecke , a right tributary of the Wenne, flows through the village in a south-westerly direction . The federal road 55 forms the main traffic axis and runs through the center of the town. In the north-west of the village rises the Reister Berge ridge (up to 495 m).

The next larger towns in the vicinity of Reiste are Bremke , which is about 2.5 km southwest, and Eslohe. Smaller towns are Herhagen in the northeast, Landenbeck in the east, Beisinghausen in the southwest, Büemke in the northwest and Büenfeld and Erflinghausen in the north.

As early as the Middle Ages, Reiste owned a famous market that was linked to the Landding (court day) of the state of Bilstein-Fredeburg , which was documented in 1231 .

On January 1, 1975, Reiste was incorporated into Eslohe (Sauerland).

The horse's head is supposed to remind of the old horse market in Reiste. Official approval took place on January 9, 1967.

Buildings

Parish Church of St. Pankratius

The under monument protection standing neo-Gothic church was consecrated. 1852 In the church there is a very valuable and historical church organ with pipe components from 1633. The organ was extensively restored in 2018 and returned to the condition in which it was built in 1854.

Beehive chapel on the Lohof

The chapel on the Lohof, built in 1840, was consecrated to St. Elisabeth of Thuringia . It was built with the aim of producing beeswax for church purposes. The beekeeping has meanwhile been stopped.

Natural monuments

The natural monument "Adam and Eve" consists of two ancient beeches on the Reister Berg, about 1 km west of Reiste.

Regular events

The rice market , which takes place annually in August, is known nationwide, with an animal show and a folk festival.
