Obersalwey is a district of the municipality Eslohe (Sauerland) in the North Rhine-Westphalian Hochsauerlandkreis , Germany . At the end of 2019, the place had 158 inhabitants.
geography
The village is located about 5 km west of Eslohe in the Sauerland-Rothaargebirge nature park . Neighborhoods are Schliprüthen , Niedersalwey and Meinkenbracht . The 519 road runs through Obersalwey and the Salwey flows .
history
The place Salwey was first mentioned on February 14, 1354. Fourteen years later a mill in Obersalwey was registered in documents. Obersalwey Castle was built around 1540.
Early clues about the size of the place can be found in an appraisal register (used to collect taxes) for the year 1543. According to this, there were 13 taxpayers in “OuerenSalwege” (by far the largest tax was due to Hanß Pannekocke); this number should have agreed with the courtyards or houses existing at that time.
The village of Obersalwey has been part of the new community of Eslohe since January 1st, 1975.
religion
The St. John Baptist Chapel in the village was probably built in the 17th century. On the last Sunday in August there is a procession in honor of John the Baptist every two years .
