Wehrstapel and iron foundry in the Ruhr Valley

Wehrstapel is a village in the Hochsauerlandkreis. It has been part of the city of Meschede since 1975 .

Wehrstapel is located at the confluence of the Nierbach in the Ruhr between Heinrichsthal and Velmede . The former federal road 7 , which was downgraded to L 743 in the mid-1990s, runs through the village . The Upper Ruhr Valley Railway also crosses the town.

On June 30, 2018, Wehrstapel had 941 residents.

history

The main courtyard Wehrstapel belonged to the Meschede monastery . After the farm and its mansion had come down through enemy attacks, fire and robbers and no one was found willing to manage the farm, provost Wilhelm von Arnsberg leased it to the city of Eversberg in 1331 .

Railroad and economy

The town's industrial development began around 1830 with a scythe forge in the Nierbachtal .

In 1860 a hammer mill and a gray foundry were built as the origin of today's M. Busch GmbH & Co. KG. This company is still considered a major manufacturer of load axles.

In 1872 the village was connected to the Upper Ruhr Valley Railway and received the Eversberg station , which is also important for Eversberg to the north .

Leisure and Tourism

The popular Ruhrtal cycle path has been running through Wehrstapel since 2006. There are interesting stations with a view over the Ruhr valley.

Since 2010, the Sauerland Kantenköppe have been in Wehrstapel directly on the Ruhrtal cycle path, right next to the road to Eversberg. A total of 18 "Kantenköppe" and one oversized chair were created from 300-year-old oak beams from Sauerland half-timbered houses and combined into a sculpture park. The park is an area of special perception, calm and reflection. The works were realized by five female sculptors and one sculptor from the Eversberg “Villa KünstlerBunt”.

In addition, Wehrstapel attracts cyclists, tourists and locals with a considerable gastronomic offer for the small town.
