Wilhelm von Arnsberg was provost of the Meschede canon from around 1323 to 1346 .

family

He was a son of Count Wilhelm von Arnsberg and Beatrix von Cuyk - Rietberg . His siblings were Jutta ( Abbess in Fröndenberg ), Konrad ( Canon of St. Peter in Osnabrück), Adelheid ( Canon in Cologne), Mechthild (Abbess in Böddeken ), Piornette (Abbess of St. Ursula in Cologne) and Gottfried IV. , the successor of his father.

Life

In 1322 or 1323 Wilhelm succeeded his uncle Walram von Arnsberg as provost of the Meschede monastery. Even after the transition from the former Meschede women's monastery to a canonical monastery under its predecessors, the location of the institution was still difficult. In a document from 1323, the first of his tenure, he concluded a settlement about the main courtyard in Horn . It speaks of bad times. The main courtyard and its Mansi had been so devastated by robbery, fire, felling of trees and the grazing of fields that they had been left almost entirely.

The nobleman Dietrich III. von Bilstein attacked Epsingsen, the main courtyard belonging to the monastery, in 1324 and led away horses, cattle and other things. Several people from Schulten von Epsingsen were captured and taken away. The Archbishop of Cologne, Heinrich II of Virneburg , called on the pastors of Attendorn , Wormbach , Eslohe and Helden to ask Dietrich von Bilstein to pay compensation. Should he refuse, the nobleman would be excommunicated. The dispute was only settled in 1327, after Dietrich had given up his bailiwick rights at the court in return for compensation of 60 marks.

In documents from his father, he is mentioned several times as a witness together with his brothers between 1327 and 1338.

Another separate document of the provost dates back to 1331. In this the provost gave the city Eversberg with the consent of his father and his son Gottfried IV. The main courtyard Wehrstapel with the associated Mansi in leasehold . This document also reports that the main courtyard was severely damaged by hostile attacks, fire and robbers. That's why nobody was found who wanted to take over the farm and pay the rent.

In spiritual terms, Provost Wilhelm and the chapter gave the Augustinian convent Annenborn in Waltringhausen the right of patronage to the church in Mellrich and that of a chapel in 1325 . The monastery paid the monastery one mark annually as a pension. After the monastery was relocated and merged with the St. Walburgis monastery in Soest , the right of patronage was also transferred.

In 1336 the knight Dietrich Rump presented his spiritual friend, the presbyter Syfridus, in order to let him invest as pastor of Oedingen . Wilhelm postponed this investiture several times because he wanted to reconcile the brothers Dietrich and Rotger, who also claimed the right to present themselves. The investiture therefore only took place in 1337.

Wilhelm's successor was Ludwig von Bilstein , who was first mentioned in 1347.
