Life

As a high school student, Pieler took part in the war of 1815 against Napoleon. After graduating from high school, he was unable to start studying immediately for family reasons. During this time he devoted himself intensively to the history of the Westphalian region. He organized the monastery and monastery archives in Soest and was also active in a similar activity at the archives of the district government in Arnsberg . He initially studied theology in Bonn , but later concentrated on philology . After passing the exam, Pieler entered the higher education service. First he worked in Dorsten before he moved to the Laurentianum grammar school in Arnsberg in 1829 . There he initially taught the lower and middle classes and was appointed senior teacher in 1839 and professor in 1863.

He married Henriette Gottschalk from Arnsberg on May 15, 1833, and two sons were the result of this connection. One son was the mining specialist and general manager Franz Pieler . His son, Franz Pieler , his grandson, was also a mining specialist.

From 1865 he was retired. After his retirement, Pieler worked as a writer and published a number of articles on Westphalian local history.

In recognition of his services, the Heimatbund Arnsberg has put a memorial plaque on a building of the Wedinghausen Monastery , which used to be a high school. Because of his merits, he was also awarded the Red Eagle Order IV class.

Pieler is buried in the Eichholzfriedhof in Arnsberg.
