St. Alexander (Mellrich)

The Catholic parish church of St. Alexander is a listed church building in Mellrich , a district of Anröchte in the Soest district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ).

History and architecture

A church was first mentioned here in 1313. The Meschede Monastery had the right of patronage. Provost Wilhelm von Arnsberg gave this to the Annaborn monastery . After this monastery was merged with the St. Walburgis Abbey in Soest, the right of patronage came to this institution. Another baroque predecessor church is occupied. It is the center of the village that defines the townscape. The current building is a long house with a flat wooden ceiling. It was built from 1845 to 1846 according to plans by the Prussian Oberbaudeputation in Berlin. The original plans were revised by Karl Friedrich Schinkel . The classical four-axis hall closes with a retracted choir . The Romanesque west tower of the 13th century was increased by one storey after a fire in 1884 and an octagonal helmet was put on it. A new Romanesque redesign of the church was carried out in 1863 by Arnold Güldenpfennig . The nave was vaulted and the formerly flat ends of the east wall were added to the apses . The version of the room, created by A. Wittkopp, was restored in 1998. In 1963, the pillars and vaults in the nave were demolished and a flat ceiling was installed. The choir design was retained. The former vicarie, which was built around 1760, was the birthplace of the Bishop of Paderborn, Franz Drepper. This building was converted into a parish and youth home in 1988/89. The church was closed for two months in 2006 because the organ was treated with woodworms and the choir room was redesigned.
