Rudolf Stähelin, son of a businessman, did historical and philological studies in Basel and Lausanne after graduating from high school. From 1860 he studied theology in Basel, Berlin and Tübingen. In 1865 he passed the final exam and was ordained. From 1865 to 1866 he worked as a teacher at the Protestant school in Schiers and from 1866 to 1867 as a vicar in Stein am Rhein . 1867–1872 he was pastor in Arlesheim .

In 1873 he completed his habilitation at the University of Basel . From 1874 he was associate professor of church history at the University of Basel, from 1875 full professor, where he was rector in 1883 . He sought “the balance between scientific reason and Christian faith” and wrote a two-volume standard work on Ulrich Zwingli .

In Stähelin's theological work, with his endeavors to bring about the kingdom of God, pietistic motifs have also condensed. As the successor to Emil Kautzsch, he was lecturer at the Frey-Grynaeisches Institute in Basel.

Stähelin was married to Agnes Maria (* 1849 in Basel; † 1942), daughter of the Basel clergyman Immanuel Stockmeyer . Her children included the writer Maria Margaretha Stähelin (1870–1959), the physician Rudolf Staehelin and the lawyer Max Stähelin-Maeglin ; her son-in-law was the publisher Alfred Kober .
