Emil Kautzsch

Emil Friedrich Kautzsch (born September 4, 1841 in Plauen ; † May 7, 1910 in Halle (Saale) ) was a German Protestant theologian , expert on the Hebrew language and Bible critic .

Life

Kautzsch studied at the University of Leipzig , where he was appointed private lecturer in 1869 and associate professor in 1871. From the winter of 1859/60 he was a member of the Leipzig University Choir of St. Pauli (today the German Choir ). From 1872 he taught as a full professor at the University of Basel , where he was rector in 1878/79. In 1880 he moved to the University of Tübingen . From 1888 until retirement in 1908 due to illness, he was Professor of Old Testament at the Theological Faculty in Halle and had at the city's University held the Rector 1898/99.

Kautzsch was one of the founders of the interdenominational German Association for the Study of Palestine (1877) and was one of the editors of theological studies and reviews from 1888 . His revision of the Hebrew grammar by Wilhelm Gesenius (from the 22nd edition in 1878 to the 28th edition in 1909), which was reprinted in 1962 and also translated into English, had the greatest influence . The dissemination of contemporary results of exegesis should, edited by him text Bible (1890-94, 3 serve 1908-10), which was provided with brief introductions and explanations. The German edition of the Apocrypha and Pseudepigraphs of the Old Testament (1898–1900), which was also considered a standard work into the late 20th century , was intended as a supplement . Kautzsch's sons Rudolf (1868–1945) and Paul (1882–1958) were art historians, his daughter Johanna (1878–1964) married the mathematician Ernst Richard Neumann .

Kautzsch was awarded the Order of the Crown 2nd Class, the Order of the Red Eagle 2nd Class with Oak Leaves and honorary citizenship of the city of Basel.
