Hans-Jürgen Zobel (born May 24, 1928 in Olbernhau ; † February 7, 2000 in Greifswald ) was professor of the Old Testament , member of the state parliament in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania , president of the synod of the Pomeranian Evangelical Church and rector of the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt University in Greifswald.

Live and act

Born in a Protestant parsonage in the Ore Mountains , Hans-Jürgen Zobel grew up in central Germany around Halle (Saale) . After graduating from high school in 1947, he first studied in Tübingen and continued his studies at the theological faculty of the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg , where he passed the first and second theological exams in 1952 and 1957. From 1955 to 1957 he was a research assistant or senior assistant to the Halle Old Testament scholar and religious historian Otto Eißfeldt , from whom he received his doctorate in 1962.

After his habilitation in 1966, he became a university lecturer in 1967 and a full professor for the Old Testament in 1973 at the theological faculty of the University of Greifswald .

According to his origins and convictions, Zobel was closely connected to the Protestant Church and participated in the training of church employees. From 1994 to 1998 he also headed the Synod of the Pomeranian Evangelical Church as President .

In May 1990 he was elected rector of the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt University of the Hanseatic city and in this office he campaigned for science and society until 1994. A portrait of Hans-Jürgen Zobel created by the Greifswald painter Martin Franz is in the Greifswald professors' gallery .

In 1990, after the peaceful revolution, he became a member of the CDU Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and was elected directly to the state parliament of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in the state election in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in 1994 in the state electoral district of Greifswald , where he made a name for himself as a cultural politician. He was also involved in the Konrad Adenauer Foundation .
