Jürgen Kohler (legal scholar)

Jürgen Kohler (born March 14, 1953 in Langenfeld ) is a German legal scholar and former professor of civil law at the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt University of Greifswald .

Live and act

After graduating from high school, Kohler studied law at the Koblenzer Strasse grammar school in Düsseldorf-Urdenbach (1971) at the University of Cologne . He passed his state exams in 1977 and 1979. As a research assistant at the Institute for Roman Law, Civil Law and Civil Procedure Law under Professor Andreas Wacke , he received his doctorate in 1983 and qualified as a professor in 1988.

After teaching assignments and substitute professorships in Cologne , Konstanz and Bielefeld , he was university professor for civil law and related areas at the University of Konstanz from 1989 to 1991 and since 1991 founding professor for civil law and civil procedural law at the reopened law and political science faculty of the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt- University of Greifswald . In 1994 he was dean of the Faculty of Law and Political Science. From 1994 to 2000 he was the 336th rector of the university. During his tenure, the university was one of the first in Germany to introduce tiered courses of study with Bachelor and Master degrees. In 1992 he became a member of the Academy of Charitable Sciences in Erfurt .

Since his tenure as rector, he has held numerous positions in national and international science organizations. From 2001 to 2005 he was Chairman of the Academic Board of the EuroFaculty , which advocates academic reforms in the Baltic States , especially at the universities in Tartu , Riga and Vilnius . Since 2002 he has been the German university representative in the University and Research Committee of the Council of Europe (CC-HER). From 2005 to 2007 he was also chairman of the German Accreditation Council . In addition, from 2001 to 2005 Kohler was chairman of the Historical Commission for Pomerania , of which he is still a member.
