The Gymnasium Koblenzer Straße , also called Kobi , is a high school with all-day lessons in the Düsseldorf district of Urdenbach , which celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2007.

history

Youth by Johannes Knubel, in 2007

The Gymnasium Koblenzer Straße was founded as a pure boys' school in 1967 and was created by dividing the student body and the teaching staff of the Schlossgymnasium Benrath . In the summer of 1967 it began operating as a municipal grammar school with a modern language, while the castle grammar school remained an old-language grammar school. The grammar school in Koblenzer Straße is the only grammar school in Düsseldorf that is not named after someone who gave it its name. In 1971, at the request of the director of the grammar school, the sculpture "Jüngling" by Johannes Knubel (a foundation of Karstadt AG) was set up in the school yard. In 1973 co-education was introduced and girls also attended school

Art exhibition

In January 1969 the art exhibition “gymnasia” organized by the pupil Michael Breer caused a sensation with works of the Düsseldorf avant-garde in the basement of the school. The artists, some of whom worked at the Düsseldorf Academy and would later be world famous, irritated the visitors with their unusual works. Günther Uecker equipped a washing machine with nails, Klaus Rinke demonstrated buoys floating in the water and Joseph Beuys exhibited his children's bathtub , which later became famous, for the first time. Also involved were Heinz Mack , Gerhard Richter , Sigmar Polke , Blinky Palermo , Daniel Spoerri and other sizes of the Düsseldorf art scene.

Dependance

When the school had space problems due to the increasing number of pupils, it got a branch on Franz-Liszt-Strasse in Düsseldorf-Benrath , where the lower school students were taught until 1983 . After that, up to the construction of the auditorium in 2004, the upper school students had to use rooms in the neighboring Theodor-Litt-Realschule for some courses.

Auditorium

Auditorium

In 2004, the grammar school received a new auditorium with over 700 seats as well as its own, individual study building in which the upper level lessons take place. There are twelve classrooms there. A cafeteria is integrated into this building , which provides a lunch menu for all-day students and has three dining rooms. The auditorium is also used by the Theodor Litt Realschule.

Sculpture for art path

In 2007 a steel and concrete sculpture created by students was created for the Urdenbacher Kunstpfad: "Kobi-topia", which is supposed to represent the school of the future.

40th anniversary

The Koblenzer Straße high school celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2007. A 172-page commemorative publication was published on this occasion.

All day school

Since the 2009/10 school year, reliable all-day care has been offered until 4:00 p.m. Regular classes are held three days a week until 3:00 p.m. For this purpose, the start of lessons is postponed to 8:00 a.m. and a lunch break of half an hour is inserted.

New registrations are restricted to Düsseldorf students

Since the school year 2011/12, for which an additional entry class had to be set up, the Gymnasium Koblenzer Straße has only accepted students from the Düsseldorf area for new registrations for the 5th grade - like the other Düsseldorf high schools - if siblings are already being taught there . This measure is intended to prevent Düsseldorf students from having to be turned away because of too high a number of registrations.

50th anniversary

On September 30, 2017, the school celebrated its 50th anniversary with a party to which 1000 guests were invited.

Capacity expansion in 2018

From January 2018, the construction of two new buildings for additional new classrooms, a new teachers' room and further office space as well as a triple gym, which was used by the Annette-von-Droste-Hülshoff-Gymnasium and the Theordor- Litt-Realschule and the sports club Garather SV are to be used. The topping-out ceremony for the buildings took place on May 17, 2018. Completion was at the end of January 2019.
