The Leibniz-Montessori-Gymnasium in Düsseldorf (LMG) is a high school with a Montessori focus and with a bilingual branch (German-Modern Greek). More than 800 students are taught at the LMG.

The school goes back to the Prinz-Georg-Realschule, established in 1896, which was renamed Scharnhorst-Realschule in 1906 after moving. The building, built under city building officer Johannes Radke , was inaugurated on April 25, 1906. In the years 1909 to 1912 it was expanded to become an upper secondary school , the completion of which entitles students to study in some subjects. After the First World War, a reform high school was attached to the school, which opened up further university access. After the school was renamed Leibniz Gymnasium again after the Second World War, girls were also accepted for the first time from the 1967/68 school year. In 1975 an extension and renovation followed. From that time until the 1990s there were also special classes for Greek students in grades 5 to 10. In the 21st century, these have long since given way to intercultural teaching and a Greek-bilingual branch, which are now part of the school program .

Montessori pedagogy

The LMG is one of two Montessori high schools in North Rhine-Westphalia. It sees itself as an offer school for all of Düsseldorf: It is the only grammar school in Düsseldorf that offers a concept that combines grammar school education and the associated demands with the specific advantages of Montessori pedagogy for all students from year 5 to high school .

The pedagogical focus on Maria Montessori began in the 2003/2004 school year and is particularly important for free work and various projects.

At the Leibniz-Montessori-Gymnasium, students can learn English, Latin, French, Modern Greek and Italian as well as many other foreign languages ​​in cross-school courses. In a Greek-bilingual branch that has existed since 1980, the graduates also receive Greek lessons as language lessons and as a bilingual subject, such as history and politics, in addition to regular lessons. As a "social Monte" , a project is called, which in cooperation with the Diakonie in Dusseldorf all students of the 9th grade volunteer in various institutions each 40 to 60 hours of social work can act.
