The Städtische Gymnasium Gerresheim is a municipal grammar school in the Gerresheim district of Düsseldorf . It is a linguistic and scientific all-day high school (“ MINT- friendly” school) with around 1,000 students who are taught by 85 teachers in a five-class class system.

history

The Städtische Gymnasium Gerresheim (GG) was founded in 1947 as a grammar school for boys and has been using the premises of the then newly built school complex on the street Am Poth since 1959 . In addition, the nearby Marie-Curie-Gymnasium (MCG) was built in 1962 and was only accessible to girls. Coeducational teaching has been offered at the Gerresheim grammar school since 1975 . There has been a cooperation between the two Gerresheimer grammar schools for a long time: the MCG is more artistic and linguistic, while the GG is more natural and linguistic.

The Trigon , a steel sculpture by the Wuppertal artist Friederich Werthmann , has been decorating the inner courtyard since 1963 and, since 1980, the front lawn of the school. Since the new construction project in 2017, the steel sculpture has been waiting for a new destination.

The school celebrated its 50th birthday in 1997 with its own car in the Düsseldorf Rose Monday procession , on which the headmaster at the time, Claus Thomann, also rode.

For the school year 2010/2011, the grammar school started full-day lessons for pupils in grades 5 to 9 as a bound full-day grammar school . For this purpose, containers were set up on part of the schoolyard for a temporary cafeteria.

In 2014, extensive refurbishments were carried out in the scientific rooms and the laboratory facilities were renewed.

A five-class lesson has been set up since 2015; for this purpose, containers must also be used as temporary classrooms.

In October 2017, construction work began to build an extension. In addition, the entrance area and the foyer were renewed. Work on the new wing, which, with a gain of around 1,600 square meters of space, includes teaching, administration and ancillary rooms as well as a cafeteria, was completed in July 2019.

subjects

School yard

The Gymnasium Gerresheim offers all compulsory subjects for secondary level I and II . In cooperation with other high schools in Düsseldorf, a number of extracurricular basic and advanced courses are offered (e.g. Japanese, Russian, Italian). In addition to advanced courses in various humanities and social science subjects, advanced courses in biology, chemistry, mathematics, computer science and physics as well as in English, French and Spanish are offered in accordance with the linguistic and natural science focus, partly in cooperation with the Marie Curie High School.

School trips and exchanges

About the Association of Friends of the School Gerresheim (VdF see below), the school possessed since 1954 a school camp in Norken (Westerwald), which regularly target of school trips was. At the end of the 2019/20 school year, the school camp in Norken is no longer owned by the VdF and is therefore no longer part of the regular travel program. As the new owners, a group of former students continues to make the school camp available for trips.

Since 1974 there have been regular ski camps in the Alpine region, which are currently compulsory in the 9th grade as part of the sport.

Schoolchildren in grade Q2 take part in various study trips that are largely based on the advanced courses.

Students in grades 7 to 9 have the opportunity to take part in a language and cultural exchange with the private school Lycée Ombrosa in Lyon and Le Bourget-du-Lac .

Association of Friends

Even before the construction of the new school building, the Association of Friends of Gerresheimer Gymnasium eV was founded in 1950. It is an association of parents, teachers and alumni of the Gymnasium with the aim of promoting the Gymnasium Gerresheims. In addition to maintaining the boathouse on Unterbacher See, this also includes providing material resources for educational purposes. Every two years, the VdF awards the social prize awarded by the former teacher Claus Thomann in 2016 to members of the school community who are particularly committed to the school community.

Rowing community and boathouse

Boathouse on the Unterbacher See

The rowing community Gymnasium Gerresheim eV (RGG), founded in 1965, is a school rowing club that is closely connected to the Gymnasium Gerresheim. It has a boathouse on the Unterbacher See, in which classes 8 and 9 also have lessons on one day of the week - in addition to rowing . The RGG is supported by the Association of Friends and Alumni and is managed by a youth committee. She goes on rowing trips and takes part in various regattas . The RGG operates several rowing boats from the skiff to the four-man with a helmsman .

Cooperation and Foundation

The school cooperates with the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus (cooperation project “Theaterfieber”), the Museum Kunstpalast Düsseldorf, the Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf (“Children's University”) and the NeanderLab center of the Mettmann district. In addition, there is a cooperation with the Marie-Curie-Gymnasium, so certain subjects are offered to each other for both schools.

The Gymnasium Gerresheim maintains the Brigitte Brix-Praetorius and Gerhard Brix-Foundation , with whose funds purchases and financial support are carried out for needy students every year.
