Jugend forscht (informally for short: Jufo ) is a school and youth competition in the field of natural sciences and technology and is considered the best known in Germany. It was initiated in 1965 by then Stern editor-in-chief Henri Nannen . The organizer of the annual Jugend forscht competition is the Jugend forscht e. V. , the organization of the individual regional and state competitions takes place together with sponsoring companies, the federal competition is held annually alternately by a federal sponsoring company.

The participants work on projects on questions of their own choosing from the MINT area and they present their results to the competition jury by means of a written work and, in the actual competition, by means of a stand designed by them and an oral lecture followed by an interview.

Conditions of participation

Participation in Jugend forscht is possible up to the age of 21 as an individual or in a group of up to three people. Students are only allowed to participate within the first two semesters. People who attend at least the 4th grade and are younger than 15 years of age take part in the Schoolchildren experiment section . The rest is assigned to the Jugend forscht division. In the case of groups, the age of the oldest group member is decisive.

A job can only be registered in the region in which the participants live or are in school or training - in the case of groups, the specification of the group spokesperson is decisive. German pupils from German schools abroad (e.g. embassy staff) and in foreign countries near the border can also take part; the corresponding schools and regions are assigned to a specific state competition.

The work must be registered for one of the following subject areas:

Works with an interdisciplinary character take part in the subject area that fits best, but can use this special area to qualify for the next level in addition to the winner in the subject area. Participation there is then again in the corresponding subject area. The prize for the best interdisciplinary work is not awarded at the regional level. In the state competition, a project becomes the state winner in this subject area and takes part in the national competition in the actual subject area, as well as in the award of the Federal Minister of Education's award for the best interdisciplinary work, which is equivalent to a national victory. It makes sense, but not absolutely necessary, to look for a supervisor among your teachers for the project - in the case of apprentices also among the trainers in the company - who will accompany the project in an advisory capacity. There are also Jufo working groups for this in many schools .

Some of the equipment required for the project can be requested from Jugend forscht , in which case a group does not have to bear the entire material costs itself. More often, however, it makes more sense to address universities and private companies directly. Most universities and companies are very helpful. But the school can also provide a lot. In some countries there are sponsor pools run by companies and private associations that support Jugend forscht participants financially in purchasing material.

Competition - process and structure

The competition is divided into different levels. For regional competition (including RW ) means any work submitted is approved, which does not violate the rules. The respective regional winners, who are selected by a jury, qualify for the state competition (also called LW ). There, a jury will once again determine the state winners who are allowed to take part in the national competition (also called BuWe ) at the highest level .

Each subject area has its own jury that evaluates the projects. Not infrequently - especially at the federal level - the jury forwards the written work of the participants to research institutes and universities in the run-up to the actual competition, so that they can assess the work in the context of current research.

In the federal states of Hamburg , Bremen and Schleswig-Holstein , the regional competition level was no longer available until 2009, and the projects began immediately at the state level. Since 2009, regional and state competitions have been held in all federal states except for Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Saarland .

Participation

In the first year of the competition (1966) a total of 244 registrations were counted (Jugend forscht and schoolchildren experiment together). In the record year 2014 there were more than 12,000 registrations, with most (2,871) in the field of biology. This was followed by technology (2,498), chemistry (2,205), physics (1,694), world of work (1,557), math / computer science (849) and finally geo and spatial sciences (624). Of the more than 10,000 nationwide participants annually (with over 5,000 projects), around 200 participants (approx. 100 projects) typically reach the national competition as state winners, where 10 projects are then recognized as national winners.

Prizes, rewards in case of success

At Jugend forscht , the winners can receive monetary sums, material prizes, internships or excursions, which are donated by sponsors . When students experiment , it usually involves small amounts of money and material prizes.

At the national competition, in addition to the prizes in the specialist areas, a prize for the best interdisciplinary work is awarded by the German Research Foundation. There is also the Federal President's Prize for the most extraordinary work and the Federal Chancellor's Prize for the most original work. These three “special prizes” have the same status as a national victory in one of the specialist areas. Some of the winning works are nominated by the federal jury for the European level for the European Union Contest for Young Scientists (not limited to the EU ). There are also a number of other special prizes at the national competition that are awarded independently. Furthermore, a first prize in the field of mathematics at the national competition qualifies you to take part in the selection exams in the selection competition for the International Mathematical Olympiad .

Even if you don't win a prize, participation in the national competition (in some countries even in the state competition) is worthwhile because of the supporting program organized by the sponsoring company. The making of contacts among the participants should also not be underestimated.

In many federal states, successes at Jugend forscht can be entered in writing in the Abitur certificate as a special learning achievement . The requirements for this depend on the regulations of the individual federal states.

Students experiment

Anyone attending at least fourth grade and being younger than 15 on December 31 of the year can take part in experiments at Schüler (short: Schüex ). Schüex participants take part in the Jugend forscht competition as normal , but are assessed separately in special school experimentation competitions. For schoolchildren experiment participants, the competition ends at the state competition.

The promotion represents a special case . If a student experimenting thesis is so good that the students experimenting -jury members are of the opinion that it could receive a prize at Jugend forscht , they can, provided that the Jugend forscht -juryors agree, to participate Youth research will be upgraded. However, this is only done if, firstly, the respective work is suitable and, secondly, it is guaranteed that it does not go under with Jugend forscht .

If a high-ranking student wins experimenting work, it rises to the next level - up to the national youth research competition  .

In countries in which schoolchildren experiment at regional level ends, exceptional Schüex work can be invited to the state competition Jugend forscht , but is only exhibited there, but not evaluated.

Local peculiarities

The state competitions in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania occupy a special position . Since this federal state has a relatively small population, there has so far only been one state competition in which all Jufo work and all Schüex work take part. Nevertheless, the small state of Bremen has more participants than most other countries. As a result, the state of Bremen introduced three regional competitions at the beginning of the 2009 competition round , in which, as in the state competition, both all Jufo and all Schüex projects take part.

There are no regional competitions in Saarland either, the work starts right at the state level. However , as in Hamburg until 2008, the state competition “ Schüler experimentieren” takes place separately from the state competition “ Jugend forscht ”. In Saarland, the winners of the subject areas of student experimentation (and possibly an interdisciplinary work) rise to the Jugend forscht state competition and take part there like the other Jufo projects. In all other countries, student experimentation is strictly separate from youth research and ends at the latest at the state level, and in some countries also at the regional level.

Another special feature of the regional and state competitions in Bremen and Saarland are the jury advisors. Former participants (preferably state winners) act as jury advisors and support the jury with their experience, also with regard to the national competition. As a “bridge” between the jury and the participants, the jury advisors in particular should give the participants feedback (constructive criticism) after the competition and support the state winners in preparing for the national competition.

The largest of all regional competitions is the Bremen-Mitte competition (urban area of Bremen excluding Bremen-Nord). This makes it larger than most of the state competitions and even has more participants than many regional states. The state with the most registrations is Bavaria .

Network for former participants

The German Young Researcher Network - juFORUM eV was founded in 2000 by twelve participants in the national competition Jugend forscht who wanted to stay in touch beyond the competition. Although the nationwide, non-profit association does not see itself as a pure network for former Jugend forscht participants, but is open to all young people interested in science and technology, there are some former Jugend forscht participants among the members of the association. The German Young Researcher Network regularly organizes state competition meetings for Jugend forscht participants.

documentation

The Stiftung Jugend forscht documents the winners / participants of the national competition in a database with a short version and z. T. with a photo of the participants.

Since 1986, the magazine Junge Wissenschaft has published the work of Jugend forscht participants four times a year. The submitted work goes through a peer review process (assessment by a scientist). Because of this, the publications count as scientific publications and can be cited in the scientific environment. The Young Science is evaluated by scientific databases.

Since 2006, the JufoBase database with further information on the projects has been set up together with the Karlsruhe Technical Information Center . Operations ceased at the end of 2013.

The 2010 national competition was documented in detail in a video log created by journalism students at the Institute for Journalism in Dortmund. The films were posted on YouTube .

Philatelic appreciation

On the occasion of the foundation of the competition 50 years ago, Deutsche Post AG is issuing a special postage stamp with an issue date of June 11, 2015 with a value of 62 euro cents. The design of the stamp comes from the graphic artist Matthias Beyrow from Berlin.
