Roland Speicher (born June 12, 1960 ) is a German mathematician who is a professor at Saarland University .

Roland Speicher, Oberwolfach 2005

After winning the federal competition Jugend forscht in the field of mathematics / computer science in 1979, Speicher studied physics and mathematics at the universities of Saarbrücken, Freiburg and Heidelberg and received his doctorate in 1989 under Wilhelm Freiherr von Waldenfels at the University of Heidelberg ( quantum stochastic processes on Cuntz algebra ). From 2000 to 2010 he was in Canada, where he was a professor at Queen's University in Kingston (Ontario). He has been at Saarland University since 2010.

He deals with free probability (with application to random matrices, statistical mechanics and operator algebras) and their combinatorial aspects and with operator algebras .

In 2012 he received the Jeffery Williams Prize . He also received the Research Excellence Award from the President of Ontario. In 2014 he was invited speaker at the ICM in Seoul (Free probability and random matrices).

Speicher is married and has four children.
