Joachim Hartmann (born January 1, 1715 in Malchow ; † November 6, 1795 in Rostock ) was a professor of theology, physics and metaphysics at the University of Rostock .

education and study

Joachim Hartmann was the son of Malchow pastor Johann Adam Hartmann (approx. 1675–1739). Initially tutored privately by his father, he attended schools in Parchim , Schwerin and Güstrow .

In March 1731 Hartmann was enrolled at the University of Rostock, but interrupted his studies in order to work as a tutor in Holstein and Mecklenburg from 1734 and as an adjunct to his father from 1737. In 1738 he continued his studies and received his master's degree from the Philosophical Faculty of Rostock University in the summer semester of 1739.

academic career

From 1739 to 1745 Joachim Hartmann was initially a private lecturer in philosophy in Rostock. In the meantime he applied twice (1742 and 1743) for the professorship for poetry. Instead, from 1745 Hartmann worked as an instructor for Prince Ludwig in Schwerin. Subsequently, in 1748 he was appointed consistorial councilor and superintendent of the Mecklenburg district. After receiving his doctorate in theology in June of the same year, Hartmann was appointed full professor of theology (1st Extraconciliarius) at the University of Rostock by Duke Christian Ludwig II in September 1748 . He thus succeeded Heinrich Askanius Engelke . Two years later, in 1750, he received the 2nd ducal professorship in theology (Conciliarius), which had previously been occupied by Franz Albert Aepinus .

When Duke Friedrich took office in 1756, Hartmann had to choose between the office of superintendent and his professorship at the university and did so in favor of the superintendent position. But he also resigned this position in 1768 and became pastor at the St. Nicholas Church in Rostock. In the same year Hartmann was appointed professor of physics and metaphysics by the city council and so resumed his work at the university. He succeeded Johann Jakob Quistorp , who held this office until his death in 1766. In 1774 he was appointed councilor professor of theology. This position, previously occupied by Johann Heinrich Becker , was held by Hartmann until his death.

From 1791 to 1795 Hartmann was senior at the University of Rostock. From 1792 to 1794 director of the Ministry of Spirituality in Rostock and during the same period also member of the learned society in Frankfurt (Oder) .
