Lake in the Hills is located in the northwestern suburbs of Chicago not far from the western bank of the Fox River , a right tributary of the Illinois River, which flows into the Mississippi . The place is located at 42 ° 10'54 "north latitude and 88 ° 19'49" west longitude and extends over 27.48 km². Lake of the Hills is in the Algonquin Township and Grafton Township .

Neighboring places to Lake in the Hills are Lakewood (on the northwestern border), Crystal Lake (on the northern border), Cary (on the northeastern border), Trout Valley (on the eastern border), Algonquin (on the southeastern border), Gilberts (12.2 km south), Huntley (on the western and southwestern town limits) and Union (15.2 miles west-northwest).

About 10 km south of Lake in the Hills runs Interstate 90 , the longest interstate highway in the country at 4958 km . Illinois State Route 47 runs through the west of the local area, and Illinois State Route 31 touches the town in the east . All other roads are subordinate routes as well as inner-city connecting roads.

The Lake in the Hills Airport is located in the north of the village area. Chicago's larger O'Hare International Airport is 32 miles southeast of Lake in the Hills.

According to the 2010 census , Lake in the Hills had 28,965 people in 9,544 households. The population density was 1054 inhabitants per square kilometer. Statistically, 3.03 people lived in each of the 9,544 households.
