The area of ​​today's city was originally inhabited by Indians from the Potawatomi tribe.

After the conquest by white settlers, the area first belonged to Putnam County , from which Cook County was spun off in 1831 . In 1836, McHenry County was formed, which initially included what is now Lake County. In 1837 McHenry became the county's first administrative center. In 1844 the county seat was moved to what is now Woodstock.

The city and county was named after William McHenry (1771-1835), an officer in the US Army in the War of 1812 and numerous Indian Wars .

In 1854 the city was connected to the railway network.
