McHenry is a city (with the status " City ") in McHenry County in the northeast of the US -amerikanischen state of Illinois . In 2010 the city had 26,994 inhabitants. In an estimate in 2011, 27,010 inhabitants were determined.

McHenry is located in the northwest suburb area of Chicago at 42 ° 20'00 "north latitude and 88 ° 16'00" west longitude and extends over 39 km². The city is located on the Fox River , a right tributary of the Illinois River that flows into the Mississippi .
The northern and central districts of McHenry are in McHenry Township ; a smaller part in the south of the city belongs to the Nunda Township .

history
The area of today's city was originally inhabited by Indians from the Potawatomi tribe.
After the conquest by white settlers, the area first belonged to Putnam County , from which Cook County was spun off in 1831 . In 1836, McHenry County was formed, which initially included what is now Lake County. In 1837 McHenry became the county's first administrative center. In 1844 the county seat was moved to what is now Woodstock.
The city and county was named after William McHenry (1771-1835), an officer in the US Army in the War of 1812 and numerous Indian Wars .
In 1854 the city was connected to the railway network.

According to the 2010 census , McHenry had 26,992 people in 9,922 households. The population density was 692.1 people per square kilometer. Statistically, there were 2.68 people in each of the 9,922 households.
The racial the population was composed of 90.3 percent white, 0.7 percent African American, 0.3 percent Native American, 1.6 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 1.6 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 12.8 percent of the population.
25.9 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 62.6 percent were between 18 and 64 and 11.5 percent were 65 years or older. 51.5 percent of the population was female.
