The Chicago Rockford International Airport ( IATA : RFD , ICAO : KRFD ) is the airport of the city of Rockford in Winnebago County in the US -amerikanischen State Illinois . It is 7 km south of the city of Rockford and 126 km northwest of Chicago . The airport is owned by the Greater Rockford Airport Authority , a joint venture between the City of Rockford, Winnebago County, and Machesney Park and Loves Park municipalities . The airport is used for general aviation in the region in the northwest apron of the Chicago metropolitan area.
Location and transport links
Chicago Rockford International Airport is located directly on the Rock River in the center of the Rockford metropolitan area, around 35 km south of the Wisconsin border . The airport can be reached via Illinois State Route 2 , which joins US Highway 20 , which has been converted into a freeway, about one kilometer north .
The Chicago Rockford International Airport is buses in the public transport involved. The RMTD Route 7 connects the airport to the center of Rockford.
Airport facilities
Chicago Rockford International Airport has a total area of around 1,214 hectares. It has two asphalt runways and is open all year round and 24 hours a day.
Passenger terminals
The airport has two passenger terminals for handling passengers . The passenger terminal for domestic flights is equipped with four gates , four passenger boarding bridges and a baggage handling system. The international passenger terminal has a gate and a passenger boarding bridge. There are three rental car locations on the airport premises.
Freight terminals
The airport has a duty-free area that is comparable to a free port . Runway 07/25 is big enough so that even the largest aircraft can land here. There are three freight terminals. The largest freight terminal is on the West Cargo Apron near the passenger terminals and is used by UPS and UPS airlines .
Two smaller freight terminals were located on the South Cargo Apron between the two runways and were used by DB subsidiary BAX Global and DHL . They were demolished in 2015.
