Potawatomi Indians lived there long before European immigrants settled the area around Algonquin . The first settlers arrived in the area around 1834. Samuel Gillilan was from Virginia , Dr. Cornish, Dr. Plumleigh, Eli Henderson, Alex Dawson, and William Jackson arrived in the area a short time later. At first there was a dispute over the naming and names like Denny's Ferry, Cornish Ferry, Cornishville and Osceola were discussed. Samuel Edwards proposed the name Algonquin on December 23, 1847, and the name was officially adopted.
The first signs of an economic upswing were seen in 1855 when the city was connected to the railway network. This enabled the farmers to reach the Chicago markets. On February 25, 1890 the place was officially founded.
