Elgin is a city of 110,145 residents in Illinois . It is located 57 km northwest of the city of Chicago , 52 km southwest of the city of Waukegan and 72 km southeast of the city of Rockford in the metropolitan area of Chicago and belongs to Kane and Cook Counties .

According to the 2010 census , Elgin had a total area of 97.7 km². Of these, 96.2 km² was land and 1.4 km² was water.
history
After a donation of land in 1864, the Elgin National Watch Company opened their first watch factory here in 1866. Up until 1964, the majority of the watches produced in the USA were made here, with a total of around 60 million pieces. The Elgin National Watch Company was one of the first companies to mass-produce watches.
The Elgin Tower Building was completed in 1929. The Art Deco- style building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.
Demographics
According to the 2010 census , 108,188 residents in 35,094 households and 25,252 families lived in the city. There were 37,848 residential units, which corresponded to a building density of 504.5 / km².
The population was divided into 65.9% White , 7.4% African American , 1.40% Native American , 5.4% Asian and 16.3% Other. 3.6% stated that they descended from at least two of these groups. 43.6% of the population was Hispanic or Latino from any of the above races.
There were children under the age of 18 in 38.0% of the 35,094 households, there were married couples in 52.6%, 13.3% were single mothers and 28.0% were non-families. The average household size was 3.03 and the average family size was 3.56.
23.4% of the population were under 18 years of age, 10.7% between 18 and 24, 33.6% between 25 and 44, 18.2% between 45 and 64 and 8.6% 65 and older. The median age was 32.5 years. 50.2% of the population were women.
The average income per household was 56,337 USD , the annual family income 68,740 USD . The average income of men was 39,581 USD , the women at 28,488 USD . The per capita income in the city was 21,478 USD . Around 6.4% of families and 8.1% of the population were below the poverty line , of which 11.6% were under 18 years old and 4.7% were over 65 years old.
