Burbank is a city in the American state of Illinois . At the 2000 Census , the population of Burbank was 27,902. Burbank is part of Stickney Township .

Neighboring communities

To the north of Burbank is the City of Bridgeview and Village Bedford Park ; to the east is the Village Hometown and south of Burbank is the City of Oak Lawn and Chicago Ridge , to the southeast is Palos Hills and to the west is the City of Hickory Hills . This is followed by the Village Justice .

history

The Burbank area was first settled by farmers in the 1850s when Lyons Township was established there. Burbank was in the southeastern area of ​​the township. In the following decades, mainly German and Dutch farmers settled here. The planned railway connection fell victim to the economic crisis of 1893 .

When Stickney Township was rebuilt from Lyons Township in 1901, Burbank was the southern end of the township. Burbank could not benefit from the suburban boom in the 1920s because the water supply, sewers and roads were inadequate. In addition, the area around Burbank struggled with flooding.

The sewer system and water supply did not improve until the South Stickney Sanitary District was established in the 1950s. The first sewer system was laid in Burbank in 1959. The flood problem was also resolved during these years. In the following years the population could be increased threefold to 20,720 inhabitants.

In 1970, Burbank was the last area to become a separate parish. At the same time, Stickney Township was annexed to Chicago. The name of Burbank is derived from the Luther Burbank Elementary School .

Demographic data

In the 2000 census, the population was 27,902. The population was distributed among 9,317 households with an average size of 2.98 people (US average: 2.59 people). This includes 7,362 family households with an average of 3.44 people (US average: 3.14 people).

The population in 2000 was 90.7% white , 0.3% African American , 1.8% Asian, and 3.9% other. 3.2% stated that they descended from at least two of these groups. 11.1% of the population were Hispanics who belonged to any of the named groups.

25.1% were under 18 years of age (5.9% under five years of age), of those over 18 years of age, 14.1% were over 65 years of age. The average age was 36.9 years. There is a slight surplus of women in Burbank of around 600 women.
