The Midway International Airport is one of the airports of the US city of Chicago in the US state of Illinois .
location
Midway is a square with intersecting runways and is located in the southwest of the city near the center. The airport, which is mainly used by many low-cost airlines, has the IATA code MDW. The airport is not suitable for large long-haul aircraft because the runways are too short. Despite strong expansion in recent years, it is significantly less used than O'Hare Airport . The largest user is currently Southwest Airlines .
history
Before local rival O'Hare overtook it in the late 1950s , Midway was the busiest airport in the world and one of the central aviation hubs for US airlines. United Airlines was headquartered here, and American Airlines was also based here before moving to New York in the 1930s.
Midway was ATA Airlines ' main base until February 2008, flying to cities in Mexico and the Caribbean from here.
Furnishing
Runways 13C, 31C and 04R have an instrument landing system (ILS).
Airlines and Destinations
The Midway International Airport serves Southwest Airlines as its base. It is also used by Delta Air Lines , Porter Airlines and Volaris . In December 2019, non-stop flights were offered to 58 national and 11 international destinations. The international destinations were in the Dominican Republic , Jamaica , Canada and Mexico .

Incidents
- On January 4, 1951, the captain of an overloaded Curtiss C-46D-15-CU Commando of the Monarch Air Service ( aircraft registration number N79982) tried to take off from Chicago Midway Airport with too low a power setting of the engines. There was a stall and loss of control. During the crash landing just outside the airport, fire broke out. All 48 occupants survived (3 crew members and 45 passengers).
- On February 20, 1956, a Vickers Viscount 744 from Capital Airlines (N7404) had to be written off as a total loss after a landing accident at Chicago Midway Airport. There were no fatalities among the 42 inmates.
- On November 24, 1959, a Lockheed L-1049H Super Constellation operated by Trans World Airlines (TWA) (N102R) crashed into a residential area about 400 meters from the Chicago Midway departure airport. After an engine failure on takeoff, the pilots returned there and were unable to maintain an appropriate attitude. All 3 crew members of the cargo flight and 8 people on the ground were killed.
- On February 29, 1960, the main landing gear of a Lockheed L-1049G Super Constellation operated by Trans World Airlines (TWA) (N7101C) collapsed during take-off at Chicago Midway Airport. All 60 occupants, 6 crew members and 54 passengers survived. The machine was a total write-off.
- On September 1, 1961, a Lockheed L-049 Constellation of the TWA (N86511) crashed after taking off from Chicago Midway Airport near Hinsdale, Illinois ( USA ) due to damage to the elevator . All 78 people on board died.
- On December 8, 2005, a Boeing 737-7H4 from Southwest Airlines (N471WN ) coming from Baltimore ( Maryland ) with 103 people on board came off the runway in heavy snowdrifts . She then broke through the airport fence and only came to a stop on a busy street. Apart from a few minor injuries, no one was injured on the plane itself, but the plane buried a car under it, as the nose wheel broke off during the unsuccessful landing in addition to an engine. In that car sat a family of five whose son was killed. The American traffic safety authority (NTSB) spoke in an initial reaction of difficult, but nevertheless acceptable conditions for the landing of the aircraft (see also Southwest Airlines flight 1248 ) .
