Des Plaines [ dɛspleɪnz ] is a city in Cook County in the northeast of the US -amerikanischen state of Illinois . In 2000 Des Plaines had 58,720 residents.
Des Plaines is located in the Chicago metropolitan area , 28 km northwest of Chicago and 37 km south of Waukegan in the immediate vicinity of O'Hare International Airport . The Des Plaines River runs through the city, east of the city center. The income of the working population spans a wide range, which is also reflected in real estate prices, which range from $ 30,000 to more than $ 1,000,000.

According to the United States Census Bureau , the city has an area of 37.6 km 2 , of which 37.3 km 2 are land and 0.3 km 2 are water. Two interstate highways , the I-90 Northwest Tollway and the I-294 ( Tri-State Tollway ) as well as the US Highways 12 , 14 and 45 run through the town . The name is derived from the Des Plaines River, which flows through the place and means from the prairie in French .
Part of the city lies over the Des Plaines Crater, an area with a rock anomaly that is likely due to a prehistoric meteorite crater . The rock floor was broken up by the impact, but subsequently filled with sediment again by Ice Age glaciers (→ see also: List of impact craters on earth ).
Demographic data
According to the 2000 census, there were 58,720 residents in 22,363 households and 15,071 families in the city. The population density was 2,590 inhabitants per square kilometer. The average family size was 3.21.
The age distribution was 22.3% under 18 years, 7.5% between 18 and 24 years, 29.2% between 25 and 44 years and 44.23% between 45 and 64 years. 17.2% of the population was older than 65 years. For every 100 female residents there are 93.6 male residents.
The median household income was $ 53,638 and the median family income was $ 65,806. The per capita income was $ 24,146. About 3.0% of families lived below the poverty line .
