Travian

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Travian is a browser game and a massive multiplayer online game that is developed and operated by Travian Games . It combines construction elements with raids and raids. Thematically, Travian is based on the time of the Roman Empire . The player can choose between three races with different characteristics.

Travian is free to the player in its original form. Additional functions can be activated through paid Travian Plus or Travian Gold accounts. As is usual in classic browser games, the individual characters are not animated. The player interacts much more with a database via a graphical interface. This checks, for example, whether the existing raw materials are sufficient for the construction of a new building.

Origin and Distribution

Oliver Eger , Travian illustrator

Travian was developed and published by Gerhard Müller in 2004. Since July 2005, he has been continuing the project with the specially founded Travian Games based in Munich and employing 150 people.

According to the operators, over 5.2 million players worldwide currently play Travian . It is marketed in 51 countries and 43 different languages. Each region has its own game, so no contact with players from other languages is necessary. For experimental games or for special interests, such as B. the start of a new version, there are many players from other regions in the world in question. In addition, in regions with high demand, the players are spread across several independent game worlds - currently twelve in the German-language version. [As of January 2011].

The game principle

The player already starts with a village. He has to choose one of the three peoples Romans , Gauls and Teutons . Every people has advantages and disadvantages. Romans, for example, can use infrastructural advantages, Gauls can ride particularly quickly and Germans fight particularly well. This is (besides the age) the biggest difference to the competition.

Apart from a main building, there are no buildings at the beginning. The player can first build simple buildings on the areas provided for this purpose. In the course of the game, these buildings can then be expanded, for example to increase productivity. As the playing time increases, there are further restrictions (e.g. storage capacities), which must first be expanded before a further development stage is reached (for more information, see technology tree ).

The four raw materials wood, clay, iron and grain can be mined on raw material fields, which later serve as food, building material or further processing. The reduction takes place automatically, according to a fixed quota per time, even if the player is not currently online. After the first buildings have been upgraded, the player can choose to continue to settle, trade or plunder (i.e. fight). The choice of other buildings and expansion stages changes accordingly. After a few weeks of playing time, if certain criteria are met, further villages can be founded or villages of other players can be conquered. However, each player's main village is impregnable, even if it is destroyed to the ground in an attack.

Game strategies can be very different. There are very aggressive players the Offer are called or defensively strong players who Deffer be mentioned. As in other games, has farms in Travian known (i. E. The conscious small holding weaker opponents to plunder there at regular intervals).

Alliances

Alliances in Travian are alliances of up to 60 players who join forces for mutual military and economic benefit. Alliances are central to the strategy in Travian . Building the wonder of the world and thus victory is not possible without a strong alliance. Allied players ensure victory by providing military support and financing the construction of the wonder of the world with raw materials. Within an alliance, players can see each other's battle reports. They have a common communication system and mostly an external forum for the discussion of strategy and tactics and their own chat.

As is usual in other games, alliances can be peacefully minded, officially or unofficially agree to an alliance or non-aggression pact or declare war.

The end of a game round

Already in the middle of each round (in the case of Travian Version 4 at the beginning) a computer-controlled people, the Natars , are placed in the game world (as Deus ex machina ). Each of the Natar villages contains an artifact that can be conquered. These artifacts bring bonuses in the game for the owner, such as faster troop building, less grain consumption or larger storage capacities. Towards the end of the round, thirteen new Natar villages are placed in the game world, which include the possibility of building a world wonder. Although the natar troops are very numerous and strong, all natar villages are usually conquered within the first few days. After occupying one of their thirteen villages, the victorious conqueror can build a world wonder there and win the game. The Natars attack all wonders of the world at regular intervals, but they do not attack other villages.

It often takes another two to three months until the end of the round, as players from other alliances keep trying to prevent or destroy foreign wonders of the world. A powerful empire (in a military as well as an economic sense) and a strong alliance are necessary for victory. When the wonder of the world has reached level 100, the round is over. After a few days, the accounts will be removed from the server . There is a restart.

Costs / financing

The game servers are funded through banner ads and two forms of enhanced accounts. The chargeable accounts called "Travian Plus" enable additional overview and operating functions. "Travian Gold" offers the player advantages in raw material production. The community complains that "gold" accounts are excessive advantages for individual players and influence the game. For a long time, travian.org was the only server in the world that waived this offer. Meanwhile was travian.org set.
