from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann Heinrich Becker (born August 14, 1698 in Rostock ; † February 24, 1774 there ) was a German Lutheran theologian.

Life

Heinrich Becker came from the Rostock family of scholars, which can be traced back to Hermann Becker . He was a son of Heinrich Becker (1662-1720), archdeacon and later pastor at the Jakobikirche in Rostock and his wife Christine Margarete, née Schomer. The mathematician and theologian Peter Becker was his uncle. Heinrich Becker studied from 1717 to 1720 at the University of Rostock , then to 1721 at the University of Halle and was in Rostock for Master PhD . After a trip that took him to other universities, he returned to Rostock and gave lectures at the philosophical faculty.

In 1725 he was elected second preacher at the Nikolaikirche . In 1730 he was appointed full professor of morality and in 1735 received his doctorate in theology. In 1743 he became professor of theology.

The following year he was elected archdeacon of the Jakobikirche, but turned it down for health reasons. An assistant was assigned to him for the sermons in the Nikolaikirche. His health problems are said to have had their cause in the death of his wife Katharina Elisabeth (1706–1744), née Michelsen, which is why he retired from the rectory in 1752. He worked publicly at the university until 1757, after which he also worked from home as rector from 1753 to 1766.
