Hermann Becker , called "the elder", also: Hermannus Beccerus (born November 23, 1632 in Rostock ; † October 9, 1681 ibid) was a German clergyman and professor of physics , metaphysics and mathematics .

Life

The son of Harm Becker and his wife Gertrud, née Mahn, studied at the University of Rostock from 1644 . From 1649 to 1650 he continued his studies at the University of Königsberg . In 1652/53 he made a trip through Holland. In 1655 he received his Magister Artium in Rostock and then traveled through Germany. In 1656 he worked as a private lecturer.

In 1661 he became a full professor for physics and metaphysics in Rostock. In 1669 he became a deacon at the Jakobikirche in Rostock . After resigning from the chair for physics and metaphysics in 1671, he became pastor of the Jakobikirche and full professor of lower mathematics. In 1671 and 1678 he was rector of Rostock University.

Hermann Becker became the progenitor of the extensive Becker family of scholars . Peter Becker became a theologian and mathematician of his sons .
