Marc Vaubourgoin (born March 19, 1907 in Caudéran, now a district of Bordeaux , † April 1, 1983 in Paris ) was a French composer.

Life

The son of the composer Julien-Fernand Vaubourgoin began his musical training at the Bordeaux Conservatory and then studied counterpoint and fugue with André Gedalge and Noël Gallon and composition with Charles-Marie Widor and Paul Dukas at the Paris Conservatory . In 1930 he won the First Second Grand Prix de Rome with the cantata Héraklès à Delphes et Actéon .

After his return from the stay in Rome associated with the award, he headed the Nantes Conservatory from 1937 to 1943. At the same time he led the symphony orchestra of Radio Rennes-Bretagne . After the Second World War he became conductor of the orchestra of Radiodiffusion française (later ORTF), with which he premiered numerous works by contemporary composers, including four operas by Germaine Tailleferre .

From 1954 Vaubourgoin headed the musicological department at ORTF. In this role he dealt intensively with the music of the 18th century earlier than others and ensured the rediscovery of a number of forgotten works from this period. He arranged for the performance of Jean-Philippe Rameau's opera Hyppolyte et Aricie and the re-performance of his opera Boréades at the Festival d'Aix-en-Provence in 1982 under John Eliot Gardiner .

Marc Vaubourgin composed symphonic works, instrumental concerts, chamber music, choral works and songs. His son Jean-Raphaël Vaubourgoin became known as an architect, his son Thierry Vaubourgoin as a painter.
