André Gedalge (born December 27, 1856 in Paris , † February 5, 1926 in Chessy , Département Seine-et-Marne ) was a French music teacher and composer .

Life

André Gedalge was a student of Ernest Guiraud at the Paris Conservatory . In 1886 he won the Prix ​​de Rome . From 1905 he was professor for counterpoint and fugue at the conservatory and notorious as the "fugue pope". His students included famous composers such as George Enescu , Maurice Ravel , Arthur Honegger , Darius Milhaud , Jacques Ibert , Florent Schmitt and Charles Koechlin .

Gedalge composed operas and ballets , four symphonies , a piano concerto, chamber music works and songs .
