Heinrich Valentin Becker (born July 27, 1732 in Rostock , † December 15, 1796 ibid) was a German Lutheran theologian and mathematician .

Life

Heinrich Valentin Becker came from the Rostock family of scholars that went back to Hermann Becker . He was the son of the Rostock theologian Johann Hermann Becker and his first wife Johanna Magdalena, geb. Möller (1707-1746). Of his two brothers, Peter Hermann Becker became pastor and senior in Lübeck, while Johann Rudolph Becker became an administrative lawyer in the service of the Hanseatic city of Lübeck and also gained importance as a writer and historian. Heinrich Valentin Becker studied at the universities of Rostock , Greifswald and Jena until 1754 . In 1754 he was a candidate for the Spiritual Ministry in Lübeck. After receiving his doctorate in 1756 as a master of philosophy, he worked from 1757 to 1762 as a private lecturer at the Philosophical Faculty of Rostock University. He then received a chair for lower mathematics there. Between 1765 and 1792 he was rector of the university several times.

In 1758/59 he became archdeacon of the Jakobikirche and in 1773 he took over the office of pastor there.

Becker examined, among other things, the "laws for determining the speed of the body in straight motion" (Rostock 1756), but published mainly theological writings.

Heinrich Valentin Becker was married to Anna Dorothea Burgmann (1736–1787), a daughter of the Rostock mayor Dr. (Johann) Georg Burgmann. One of her sons was Hermann Friedrich Becker . Becker was related by marriage to Jakob Friedrich Rönnberg , professor of morals, Walter Vincent Wiese , professor of theology and Johann Christian von Quistorp , professor of law in Rostock and two-time rector of the University of Bützow .
