Hermann Friedrich Becker (born April 21, 1766 in Rostock ; † October 5, 1852 there ) was a German forester . He is one of the founders of regulated forestry .

Life

Hermann Friedrich Becker came from the Rostock family of scholars that went back to Hermann Becker . The son of the pastor and professor Heinrich Valentin Becker (1732–1796) and his wife Anna Dorothea († 1787), daughter of the mayor Burgmann, was taught by private teachers until the age of ten and then attended the large city school in Rostock . From 1782 he studied mathematics, physics, architecture and economics at the University of Rostock .

In 1792 he became a forest inspector in the Rostocker Heide , based in Rövershagen . He introduced regulated forestry and thus created the basis for sustainable use of the forest. This included the division of the high forest into fields and the ban on forest pasture . He also developed a tree height meter named after him, which was used to estimate the length of timber in the stand and was used in forestry for a long time. He gave lectures in economics and camera studies at the University of Rostock .

In 1846 he retired in Rostock. His successor as forest inspector of the Rostock Heath was his son-in-law Georg Garthe.

In honor of Becker, a memorial stone was set in the Rostock Heath, which is known as the "Beckerstein". He is also considered to be the first bathing guest in Warnemünde known by name , which is reminiscent of a plaque in the Rostock district.
