Peter Hermann Becker (born July 19, 1730 in Rostock , † April 24, 1788 in Lübeck ) was a German Lutheran theologian and senior at the Ministry of Spirituality in Lübeck.

Life

Becker came from a Rostock family of university teachers and pastors. His father Johann Hermann Becker became a professor at the University of Greifswald in 1747 and pastor at the Marienkirche in Lübeck in 1751 . His mother Johanna Magdalena, born in 1747, died. Möller, was the daughter of the bailiff and supervisor of the Mecklenburg salt works Valentin Möller and sister of the Rostock pastor Otto Petrus Möller (1695–1746). Peter Hermann was the oldest child; of his two brothers, Heinrich Valentin Becker followed the family tradition and became professor of theology at the University of Rostock , while Johann Rudolph Becker became an administrative lawyer in the service of the Hanseatic city of Lübeck and also gained importance as a writer and historian.

Peter Hermann Becker was taught by his father's private tutors and colleagues. At the age of 16 he was enrolled at the University of Rostock at Easter 1746 . In Greifswald he was the first respondent to a disputation chaired by a father in 1748. As early as 1749 he obtained his master's degree here on the basis of a disputation together with his brother, again chaired by his father. When he was called to Lübeck in 1751, the two sons initially stayed in Greifswald in the house of Rector Hermann Jacob Lasius . At Easter 1752 Peter Hermann Becker renewed his matriculation in Rostock, but after a short stay in Lübeck he went to the University of Jena . In 1754 he was respondent to a disputation on original sin chaired by Johann Christoph Köcher . In 1755 he presided over a natural law philosophical disputation on the forced oath with Balthasar Münter as the respondent, moved into the apartment of Johan Ernst Gunnerus , who was called to Copenhagen, and began to give lectures. Instead of an academic career, however, his father called him to Lübeck, where he first became the youngest preacher at the Lübeck Petrikirche in 1756 and then pastor of the Jakobikirche in 1767 .

In 1769 he sided with the Bergedorf pastor Johann Ludwig Schlosser and thus against Johann Melchior Goeze in the (2nd) Hamburg theater dispute .

In 1787 Becker became senior in the ministry of the clergy, but was only able to hold this office for a short time until his death. Ludwig Suhl and Johann Daniel Overbeck wrote him memorials.

Since 1759 he was married to Elsabe Catharina, b. Schmidt, the daughter of a Lübeck businessman. The couple had 8 children, some of whom died early. The eldest son Johann Hermann Becker (* 1760) died as a candidate in 1786. Gottlieb Arnold Becker (1764–1829) became a preacher in 1788 and in 1800 the main pastor of the Jakobikirche. Both of them have family books (friendship albums) from their student days in Jena and Göttingen in the Lübeck City Library .
