Johann Daniel Overbeck
Johann Daniel Overbeck (born June 23, 1715 in Rethem ; † August 3, 1802 in Lübeck ) was a Protestant theologian and rector of the Katharineum .
biography
Johann Daniel Overbeck was the son of superintendent Caspar Nicolaus Overbeck (1670–1752). He and his two brothers first attended the Michaelis School in Lüneburg . In 1731 he returned to Lübeck from the Electorate of Hanover . Since his parents could not raise the school fees for all three boys at the same time, he was already working as a tutor while at the same time visiting the Katharineum as a pupil. In 1734 he began studying theology at the University of Helmstedt , where Johann Lorenz von Mosheim hired him as a private tutor, which was used to finance his studies. In 1743 he became vice rector in Quedlinburg . In 1744 he returned to the Katharineum as sub-rector as the successor to Johann Friedrich Behrendt . The management of the city library was also connected to this position . In 1753 he was promoted to vice rector under rector Johann Henrich von Seelen , who he succeeded in 1763. He held this position until his retirement in 1795.
As a person, he did not take up the changes brought about by the Enlightenment for himself and the school he ran, and the Katharineum reached a marked low point of reputation under his leadership at the end of the 18th century. This must not hide the fact that he was a very respected scientist in the tradition of his predecessor of souls. He also wrote lyrics for the evening music . The University of Kiel awarded him an honorary doctorate on his 50th anniversary in 1793 . Exhausted in strength and longing for peace and quiet , he asked for his retirement in 1795.
On October 1, 1754, he married Charlotte Chüden (* 1725, † January 7, 1802) in Lüneburg, the second daughter of court doctor Dr. Christian Friedrich Chüden. This marriage resulted in two daughters and a son, of whom only the younger daughter survived:
- Dorothee Erneste Conradine (* 1758, died early)
 - Eleonore Wilhelmine (* 1760, married to the merchant Johann Hinrich Knauer since 1789, senior man of the Novgorod driver)
 - Johann Christian Daniel (* 1762, † 1792 after a smallpox infection )

The mayor of Lübeck, Christian Adolph Overbeck, was his nephew.
